Have you ever met a unicorn?

Unicorns are the essence of mystery and mythology, wrapped in magic. They are beauty that has no boundaries. They are whimsical, but mightier than any 100 beings known to human existence. They are sought after for their healing abilities. They have the Grace of presence to hold space for those in need, while simultaneously keeping guard against those who may seek to harm. Unicorns are at times shown as an ethereal force with a bright glow about them, and yet they also are known to allow their glittering rainbow colors to show to remind us to not take life so seriously. They will unabashedly be silly, laugh, and play. They are the perfect combination of self-confidence, pride, achievement, humility, courage, determination and love.

So I go back to my question. Have you ever met a unicorn? You see, while anyone over the age of 3, knows about them and can describe them to you. No one I know can say they have ever seen one. I have not only seen one, I have had the highest honor to have a unicorn as my best friend for the last almost 15 years.

We met at a coffee shop to talk about some work I needed done for a website. I was hooked from the first glance of that impish grin. Our one hour meeting turned into the first of too many to count five hour days sitting around a table or desk and talking. We have never been to a restaurant without having a shift change, or two.

Since that first meeting, We have been around the globe, and taken lots of short road trips. We have had sleepovers, late night pizza parties, and eaten cake for lunch. Everything is an adventure in the best of ways. Have you ever been in a car with someone and realized that you never turned on the radio? We never had it on. Not once. We would talk the entire time we were driving. 10-13 hours of driving, and no music. Just friends, talking, laughing, listening, and sharing the human experience. That is the best thing about that time together. There is no expectation of who you are or should be. You just are. And you are accepted as such. That’s magic.

My unicorn is now under hospice care. The time we have together is coming to an end sooner than expected. But then again, I never thought I would meet my incredible unicorn, so I’m not sure if I should have expected that magical creature to selfishly stay with me forever. But Once you experience that kind of magic you never want it to end.

My husband used to say that watching us together was like watching an awesome interview show. It’s rapid-fire quips, lots of questions, laughter, and hoping you don’t miss anything important if you have to leave the room.

We have been there for each other for good and bad and have shared our joys, successes, and sorrows. To say I was taught what friendship truly means is an understatement.

To my sparkly, beautiful, kind, loving, creative, brilliant, and courageous, best friend: I love you. I will always love you best. Because you are the best. You are forevermore my glittery unicorn.
